Support Kappa Sigma at the University of Washington!

This Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving, March 6-8, we're asking you to make a tax-deductible donation to support a cause near and dear to the Beta-Psi Chapter– the creation of a new Scholarship-Leadership Award named in honor of Brother Harold E. Carr. 100% of your gift, in the amount of $10.34, $50.34, $150.34, $340, $3,400, or $34,000, will help fund this special scholarship.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 to establish a permanent $2,000 annual Scholarship in Brother Carr's name that will benefit a Beta-Psi Chapter Brother every year in perpetuity. When the Beta-Psi Chapter reaches $25,000 raised during the weekend, it will automatically create a $1,000 annual Scholarship-Leadership Award. There is no risk to participating in this special Named Scholarship because all amounts raised shy of $25K between or over $50K will be directed to the existing Chapter Scholarship Fund to benefit Beta-Psi undergraduates.

Harold E. Carr was born on October 4, 1933, in Shelton, Washington, and grew up in Kamilche, Wash., an old logging hamlet halfway between Olympia and Shelton. His first six grades were in a one-room schoolhouse. He graduated in 1951 from Irene S. Reed High School in Shelton and served as his senior class president. Soon after, he pledged Kappa Sigma at the University of Washington, and was initiated in January 1952. A couple of previous Shelton grads who were members were instrumental in Carr’s decision, plus the fact that the Beta-Psi Chapter was thriving with 70-plus members, had a good reputation, and was home to several athletes and student officers.

He made several lifelong friends at Kappa Sigma. During his undergraduate years, he served as the Chapter’s Pledge Educator, Grand Procurator, and Grand Scribe. As a journalism major, he produced a recruiting brochure for the Chapter. Carr was on the crew team and worked in the Kappa Sigma kitchen to make extra money.

He served in the Army with his Chapter Brother Rolf D. Glerum; Carr ended up in Formosa (Taiwan), and Glerum in Germany. Later in life, they made 15 international trips together. After three years in the Army, Carr worked on two newspapers in Washington State, then joined Boeing in its Public Relations Department, where he spent 35 years. For the last 14 years, he was Corporate Vice President of Public Relations and Advertising under three Boeing CEOs. He served on several Seattle non-profit boards.

While he was based in Houston, supporting Boeing on the Saturn-Apollo program, he witnessed the launches of Apollo 4 through Apollo 12 and the moon landing flight. In the early 1980s, he led worldwide sales demonstrations for the then-new 767 and 757 jets.

In 1997, he retired and was awarded the John G. Tower Distinguished Alumni Award. In the early 1980s, he became Beta-Psi Alumnus Advisor, a post he had for nine years. He then served on the Beta-Psi building board and scholarship committee.

In addition to Kappa Sigma, Carr is a member of the UW Department of Communications Alumni Hall of Fame, the University’s Tyee Club, is a University of Washington Laureate, a member of the President’s Club, and a football season ticket holder for nearly 60 years.

Now is the time to rally behind this historic initiative and honor the lasting legacy of Brother Harold E. Carr. Donate Now!
