This Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving, we are asking you to support the creation of a new Named Scholarship in honor of one of Kappa Sigma's Greatest Military Heroes, Brother Douglas B. Fournet.
Our goal is to raise $25,000 to establish this scholarship and provide an annual $1,000 Scholarship Leadership Award to an undergraduate Kappa Sigma who is actively involved in ROTC or another university-based military program, helping support his education and recognizing his commitment to service and leadership.
Douglas Bernard Fournet lived a life defined by courage, discipline, and selfless leadership. A native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, he attended McNeese State University before answering his nation’s call to serve. Commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, he deployed to Vietnam in 1968 as a rifle platoon leader with the 1st Cavalry Division.
On May 4, 1968, in the A Shau Valley, his platoon came under intense enemy fire. After identifying a concealed claymore mine along his unit’s route of advance, Lieutenant Fournet ordered his men to take cover. Fully aware of the danger, he ran toward the explosive and, when detonation became imminent, threw himself onto it to shield his soldiers. His sacrifice saved lives.
For his conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Today, his legacy stands not only in citation but in stone. A statue erected in his honor in Lake Charles serves as a permanent reminder of the character, bravery, and leadership he embodied. It represents more than a moment of heroism. It represents a life lived in service to others.
The Douglas Fournet Scholarship Leadership Award honors undergraduate veterans and active service members who pursue academic excellence while living out the same spirit of sacrifice and commitment. In alignment with Kappa Sigma’s Military Heroes Campaign, this award reflects our enduring promise to support those who serve and to recognize leaders who place others before themselves.
Brother Fournet’s legacy challenges each of us to lead with courage and to serve with purpose.
